Mokoko sits at the heart of Bristol’s latest development, Wapping Wharf. The owner and creator behind the young brand is Jake Harris; after successfully running Jacobs Coffee House and launching the first Mokoko site, we collaborated once again to design this second site.
Understanding the brands ethos and deliberately different offering to other coffee shops played a key importance, both aesthetically and operationally the offering challenges that of a typical coffee venue. Whilst most brands assume coffee is best received in a seated environment, the concept behind Mokoko challenges this and has an emphasis on the grab and go service, the second site is significantly larger than the first, allowing us to enrich the eat in and take out offering.
We wanted to challenge the conventions of what an independent coffee shop and bakery should look like and blur the boundaries between front of house and areas that would usually be recognised as back of house. A long shallow split across two levels presents itself well from the outside, but means that everything has to be right in amongst the customers. The provides a bustling, convivial environment but one that had to be engineered to the last milimiter.
